About her career, she has stated: “Despite my diverse musical background and my interest in different genres I had never really explored dance music. Aside from receiving 5 Future Favorites on A State of Trance, Shogun saw his placement on DJ Magazine’s annual list go from #231 to #122 just over the past year.

Lisa Marie Presley Talks About Finding Self With New Album

Music News 20 May 2012, 12:37 am CEST

Ever since her music career started nearly a decade ago, Lisa Marie Presley was judged in her father’s shadow and never felt comfortable with the sound of her first two albums, 2003’s To Whom It May Concern and 2005’s Now What. Presley, who recently released her third album Storm and Grace, revealed in a recent interview that she found herself while working on Storm.

Presley’s first two albums reflected a rebellious time in her life, a point in which she didn’t want to do country out of fears of comparison with her father. Yet, she mentioned in an interview with Reuters, the top-40 marketing from a decade before felt forced and the country sound of Storm fell into place. In fact, she considers her third album an anti-pop record. She said: "Once I got that out of my system ... I just quieted and calmed down ... In this process of writing this record, I found a better bed for myself and my voice and my writing to lie in."

While Presley went for an Americana sound, she mentioned Dan Fogelberg, Gordon Lightfoot, and Neil Young as inspirations and worked with T-Bone Burnett and British producers in London. She added: "The Brits tend to acknowledge and respect culture and tradition. (They love) what's amazing about Americana music, so they naturally respected and admired it, and it was such a natural progression."

In an interview with Us Weekly, Presley revealed that she essentially started from the ground up for Grace and Storm, which included moving to England. She explained the changes in her life by saying: “I think I'm just kind of getting rid of everything and everyone that was around me and starting from ground zero again. People around you will either make or break you and I just think that I was previously surrounded with the wrong people and situations. I was quite angry as a result. I was constantly shadowboxing but I wasn't sure who to fight.”

Lana Del Rey Releasing New Single Titled "National Anthem"

Music News 20 May 2012, 12:35 am CEST

Announced yesterday, a fourth single from Lana Del Rey’s Born to Die is being released. Titled “National Anthem,” the new single is set for a July release, right in time for Independence Day.

Unlike “Blue Jeans” and “Video Games,” “National Anthem” has been a love-it-or-hate-it track from Del Rey. The opening teases at a celebratory patriotic track, with string orchestra chords broken up by the crackle of fireworks. Perfect for the holiday, right? But, then, Del Rey’s lyrics fabricate a dysfunctional, push-pull relationship between a couple, one that’s a capitalism metaphor for the never-ending pursuit of wealth.

But, you might think, how’s that so bad, especially considering Del Rey’s output has primarily been cutely lyrics of relationships on a backdrop of Americana? If done well, “National Anthem” might have actually been a good song. Instead, Del Rey treats listeners to her abysmal rapping abilities and overly-layered nasally Betty Boop-esque vocals and spits out cringe-worthy lines like this:

Money is the reason, We exist. Everybody knows it, It's a fact. Kiss, kiss.

If you haven’t heard “National Anthem,” listen to it here before it’s available as a single release:

Born to Die has already sold 2 million copies globally. Del Rey (real name Lizzie Grant) is currently promoting the album in Europe, where it’s already selling well. As far as promoting the release stateside, the singer’s label, Interscope, apparently scrapped her North American tour in February, not too long after her Saturday Night Live debacle. The concert dates, however, were postponed, and Del Rey will be doing a proper tour in the fall.

Radio Play, Sales of Donna Summer Records Sharply Increase Just Days After Death

Music News 19 May 2012, 10:38 pm CEST

Presently, nearly half of Donna Summer’s back catalog is unavailable physically and digitally. But, that isn’t stopping consumers from buying her records or radio DJs from playing her singles. In fact, Billboard reports, sales and play of Summer’s music increased significantly just days after her death on May 17.

Although no actual figures have been reported, sales from her greatest hits albums and remix collection are expected to total between 20,000 and 40,000 by the end of this week. While the late singer has seven greatest hits records, the two predicted to bring in the most sales are 2003’s The Journey: The Very Best of Donna Summer and 1979’s On The Radio – Greatest Hits Volumes I & II.

Summer released recordings on multiple labels, including Casablanca Records in the early part of her career, Geffen Records in the 1980s, and Atlantic Records in the late 1980s and 1990s. Her last studio release was 2008’s Crayons, which is available both physically and digitally. For the rest of her back catalog, however, her Casablanca releases, such as 1975’s Love to Love You Baby, can be found digitally but not physically. Her Geffen and Atlantic records, including The Wanderer, Donna Summer, Cats Without Claws, All Systems Go, I'm a Rainbow, Another Place and Time, and Mistaken Identity, can neither be found digitally nor physically.

Radio stations drastically upped play of Summer’s songs the day after her death. The day before, her songs received just 145 plays on U.S. terrestrial radio stations monitored by Nielsen BDS. The day after, that figure increased to 2,015, with “Last Dance” played 408 times, “She Works Hard For the Money” 290 times, and “Bad Girls” 298 times.

Van Halen Cancels Remaining Tour Dates From Reported Fatigue

Music News 19 May 2012, 10:36 pm CEST

Last week, Van Halen announced without warning that the last 30 dates of their North American tour were canceled. Since they made the unofficial statement, a reliable source came forward, explaining the group was canceling these dates as the result of fatigue. While this amount accounts for roughly three months of their tour, Van Halen apparently isn’t canceling these performances permanently and is merely postponing them.

While rumors of internal disagreements, injuries, or poor ticket sales soon came about after the informal announcement, the source set the record straight by saying: "[The band is] doing great with ticket sales. They're not fighting. They're just burnt and they want to take some time off. They got so excited and everything was going so well, they said, 'let's add more dates,' and I don't think they realized how tired they were. That may not sound like the truth, but it is."

Kelly Clarkson Premiering New Single at Billboard Music Awards

Music News 19 May 2012, 10:34 pm CEST

Kelly Clarkson has scored two hits from her fifth album, Stronger, so can a third be far behind? Possibly. Her third single, a track called “Dark Side,” is set to debut at the Billboard Music Awards this coming Sunday, and will start to receive radio play on Monday. During her Billboard Music Awards performance, Clarkson will mash up “Dark Side” with “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You).” The latter track was Stronger’s second single and scored Clarkson a No. 1 hit. Both tracks, as well, were produced by Greg Kurstin.

Aside from this performance, Clarkson already shot the video for “Dark Side” and is performing the song on an upcoming episode of Dancing with the Stars.

Along with releasing her third Stronger single, Clarkson’s coming back to television 10 years after her American Idol win. But rather than as a contestant, the “Mr. Know It All” singer will be mentoring television competition Duets. The first few episodes have already been taped, and after June 28, the rest will be televised live.

Why has it taken Clarkson so long to be a reality television competition judge? She explained to Billboard in a recent interview that she had been offered opportunities before but turned them down and then added: The first four years of my career was crap. I was successful but I was so busy. The dream is to be successful but also be happy and that was one of my biggest reasons for doing the show. I know this sounds super cheesy, but I wish I would have had somebody there to hold my hand or at least say this is a poor decision or this is something you should really do or look out who you hire. I worked with a lot of great people, but there have been people who say 'we want you to be the biggest star in the world' and I say 'umm, that's not a goal of mine.' I want a life. I think it's important for them to figure what they want musically and how they want to live their life. I'd like to be able to help.”

Fun & Hayley Williams Cover Goyte’s ‘Somebody I Used to Know’ (Video)

Music News 19 May 2012, 2:21 am CEST

The guys of Fun and Paramore’s leading front women Hayley Williams recently collaborated, covering Goyte’s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’.  The group performed the hot track that is currently playing overtime on the radio these days at BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge.

During the song Williams sang the vocals of Kimbra on a satellite link-up. while Fun’s Nate Ruess took on Goyte’s part.  Talking to NME, Nate shared that he thinks “it went well.”  Adding, “It was a pretty hectic morning, we were never sure how linking Hayley into the show was going to go, it seemed like a pretty daunting technological task.”

It didn’t help that Fun’s pianist Andrew was under the weather as well.  "Then, to top it off, Andrew got food poisoning and suddenly we had no piano, which was the base of our original version. The fact that we got through it was unbelievable," he continued.

Not an easy task for the all the artists involved who have always worked together at the spur of a moment.  “We’ve never worked together; she’s always come up and sang with us when we were on tour, so we’ve sort of worked together.”

Ruess was also asked if he had any details involving the new the new Paramore record and if he would be appearing on the set of upcoming tracks.  "I'm not going to be involved at all. I'm going to be a fan from a far. I think we might meet up in LA and hang out in a few weeks, but I like to stay as far away as possible from any artists who are friends. I refuse to listen to demos, so I've not heard anything."

Taylor Swift Gives $4 Million to Country Music Museum

Music News 19 May 2012, 1:58 am CEST

Taylor Swift is widely known as a miss goody-goody, who has a very generous heart and she recently gave an example of that side of her personality by making a very sizeable donation to an organisation that promotes musical education in the US.

The 22-year old beauty has handed a cheque of $4 million to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum for the financing of the Taylor Swift Education Center, an exhibition and classroom site, which is expected to be made available for public viewing in two years' time.

The museum director Kyle Young told the Associated Press: "In terms of what it will allow us to do, we do education very well now. It will allow us to do what we do better, serve more people, develop new programs, and I'm happy to say that as we talked through this opportunity with Taylor, she very much wants to be involved in an advisory capacity in what we do. Is there a better person out there who's in touch with a young audience? I think not. I was joking we should be paying her to do that. I was only joking."

The donation made by Swift is the biggest amount ever received by the museum from a musician and is second overall. The "You Belong with Me" crooner has a special bond with the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, as she inked her first record deal there and her first music performance also took place at the same venue.

"For Taylor to want to engage herself in the life of this place in such an appropriate way, every way you slice it and dice it, it's great," Young added.

John Legend Insults X Factor Judges Britney Spears & Demi Lovato

Music News 18 May 2012, 4:27 am CEST

Singer John Legend has become a hot topic after the new face of the competition series ‘Duets’ made comments about the news that both Britney Spears and Demi Lovato have signed on as judges for the upcoming season of 'The X Factor', as confirmed by That Grape Juice.

"You know it's interesting. It should be very interesting. I don't have much to say," he said. "It's interesting when people you know who are judging singing competitions when they aren't really singers. It's interesting."

Legend then seemed to change his tune, complementing the Toxic singer and Lovato as the new additions to the Fox series. "Oh come on, everything Britney does, she excels at. Demi is a lovely young lady, and I'm sure they'll do nothing but make the show a lot more fun to watch,” he added.

Luckily Legends co-star and former American Idol winner Kelly Clarkston seemed to smooth things over when she gushed over the good news. "I'm excited for both of them. I'm a big fan of both of them. Both of those girls are super sweet," she said. "I think it's fun for them too to just be more out in the public eye again. I think those two are two you really want to root for and you really want them to succeed, so I think that's exciting."

Jessica Simpson Designing Maternity Line

Music News 18 May 2012, 3:26 am CEST

Early this week, Jessica Simpson stated she’s designing a maternity line. Just two weeks after giving birth to daughter Maxwell Drew, the singer-turned-designer made the announcement. With affordable, 1970s-style pieces, the line makes its debut in the fall and will be sold through Macy’s, Motherhood Maternity, and Destination Maternity. About the style, the Fashion Star mentor said in a release: “[The line has] breezy, everyday pieces aimed at the modern mom-to-be who wants to maintain her fashion edge throughout her pregnancy.”

She went onto add: “I’m so excited to partner with Destination Maternity to design a collection of fashionable styles that make you look and feel great. You want to wear clothes that are flattering to your baby bump; you want to show your bump off.”

Why so soon? Before giving birth, Simpson tweeted about being in a hospital, wearing a leopard-print caftan. She wrote: “I just woke up from a dream that I wore a leopard caftan in the hospital. […] Fabulous!! Now I need to find one!”

The singer gave birth on May 1, and she and finance Eric Johnson made the birth announcement over her website. Since that point, Simpson was given a $4 million deal from Weight Watchers to lose her baby weight. At one point during her pregnancy, she reportedly weighted 170 and was eating buttered Pop Tarts and macaroni and cheese. With this incentive, Simpson, a source told Us Weekly, will head back to the gym once her C-section heals.

Lady Gaga in Indonesia: Concert On or Off?

Music News 18 May 2012, 2:45 am CEST

On Tuesday, Lady Gaga’s sold-out Jakarta, Indonesia show appeared canceled, as eight conservative Islamic groups protested the singer’s appearance, stating her clothing and dance corrupt youth. In fact, the Islamic Defenders Front threatened physical force to prevent the “Marry The Night” singer from performing: the group warned that 30,000 members and supporters would block Gaga from entering Jakarta. As a result, the permit for the June 3 Born This Way Ball show was denied.

Or, was it? Today, the singer’s official Indonesian fan club, Gaga Indo, tweeted that he performance was given a go: "Confirmed BTWBALL Jakarta will still be held on June 3 at SUGBK (Bung Karno Stadium) :) #IINDONESIASAVESGAGA." They followed that with, "Bigdadday (concert promoter), MUI (Indonesian Ulama Council), FPI (Islamic Defenders Front), and Polri (National Police) have agreed that BTWBALL is still set in Jakarta, on the terms and condition which must be fulfilled. "

On the other hand, a piece published the same day in The Jakarta Globe has the police stating they’ll disperse the concert if the promoters go ahead. The Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto told the press: “Basically they think her concerts are against our national culture and traditional values because they deem those concerts to be vulgar. We’ve analyzed the situation. The result is, it may potentially trigger conflicts.”

Gaga’s outfits apparently violate Indonesia’s Pornography Law. At the moment, however, the show’s promoter stated cancellation is not definite, as the permit is still in the process of being approved.

The singer started the Asian leg of her tour last month, and tickets for the Jakarta show, expected to be the largest date, already went on sale.

Bill Ward Not Doing Black Sabbath Reunion Shows

Music News 18 May 2012, 2:04 am CEST

Since Black Sabbath announced a reunion tour and album in the fall, Bill Ward appeared to have been on the fence, with a contract being the obstacle to commitment. This week, however, Ward announced through his website that he will not be joining the other three original members for the Birmingham, Download Festival, and Lollapalooza performances.

In his statement, Ward delineates all contract conflicts up until this point. First, he explains, he was asked to participate “minimally” at the Download Festival; he would have done three songs, and another drummer would have filled in the remainder of the set. Ward, however, states he couldn’t watch another drummer play a set of Sabbath.

He also explained he found out about on April 30 the Birmingham appearance; before then, he had no knowledge of the gig. By May 9, he was given an offer for a free show in the U.K. to see how that gig would go; that would’ve opened opportunities to do the festivals. About this, Ward wrote: "I can't prioritize the Sabbath fans making one show more important than the other. I can't do that. All of you are important. It's all the gigs or none at all. I can't come to Birmingham and 'see what happens' knowing there is a risk of not being able to play Download or Lollapalooza. Again, for me, it's all or nothing.”

Then, regarding contract issues, he stated: I made a solemn vow after the last European and Ozzfest concerts that I would never again enter into what was, in my opinion, a totally unsatisfactory contract. I have to stand for something, and as painful as it is, I’m doing it.”

Plans for a tour and album were announced in November, but by January, Tony Iommi dropped out for most of the tour, after revealing his struggles with lymphoma. With Iommi leaving, with the exception of the Download Festival, the tour was turned into Ozzy & Friends.

Titled Trouble Man, the Southern rapper’s eighth studio album is set for a September 4 release and will feature both of his recent singles, “Like That” and “Love This Life.” On the radio program, he said: “Look forward to those summertime anthems that we’ve grown to love about T.I.”

In another recent interview with The Juice, the rapper revealed even more about Trouble Man, including his source and inspiration for material. He explain: "This is the first project where I'm talking about things that I've experienced before that I'm not necessarily experiencing now cause I'm not doing a whole lot of partying I do a little bit but not a lot."

An album with B.o.B, titled Man and the Martian is in the works, as is a collaborative album with Young Jeezy. Speaking with RapFix Live, T.I. mentioned they have about five or six records – roughly 30 to 40 percent of the release – complete, although no deadline or title is attached to the project at the moment.
